EMBCA in association with TACCI present "The 2nd Hellenic Rembetika and Turkish Music Concert"; an evening of Hellenic Rembetika and Turkish Music featuring vocalist Julie Ziavras leading the Hellenic Rembetika Ensemble.

Performing Rembetika music, the blues of Greece is vocalist and Music Director Julie Ziavras, joined by Kostas Psarros (bouzouki, vocals), Mavrothis Kontanis (violin, baglama), Dimitris Christopoulos (accordion), Nick Mandoukos (guitar, bass) and Steve Vavagiakis (hand percussion).

The Turkish chorus and ensemble Strings of the East is lead by Cengiz Onural. The concert is sponsored by The East Mediterranean Business Cultural Alliance (EMBCA) in association with TACCI (Turkish American Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Soprano Julie Ziavras will present a collection of Greek songs capturing the lyric expression and the rich, deep texture of the Greek spirit and culture joined by Kostas Psarros (bouzouki) and Petros Hadjopoulos, keyboard.

The evening is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Harlem Week, in support of the Jazz Museum and the bringing back of the original Acropolis castings to CCNY Harlem. Sposored by Lou Katsos, president of EMBCA, executive board member and Vice President of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and the President's Executive Advisory Board of the City College of NY. Casts of the iconic art from the Parthenon now grace the Graduate Center's lobby and Mina Rees Library at the City University of NY. Aquired by CCNY in 1852, these 24 casts are exact copies made from the molds of the marbles, friezes, metopes and pediments that decorated the Parthenon's exterior. They are on long term loan to the Graduate Center from CCNY. Their conservation and restoration was sponsored by the OnassisFoundation and they will be visible to the passersby through the windows facing 5th Aveneue at 34th Street.

Soprano Julie Ziavras and pianist/composer Steve Margoshes share the stage to launch a new concert series with songs celebrating spring and young love.

Julie Ziavras, described by the New York Times as "an estimable vocalist' and Steve Margoshes, pianist, Broadway composer and orchestrator (Fame, The Musical), present a program of classical song and Steve's original compositions. Works featured are in six languages and include Mahler, Faure, Duparc, Mompou, Grieg, Theodorakis, Jerome Kern, Gershwin and a new song Steve has composed to the poetry of e.e. Cummings to be premiered by Julie in this concert.

This inaugural concert of the Arthur Patchett Memorial Music Series is presented by the Wallkill River Center for the Arts (formerly the Walllkill River School), with proceeds to benefit the Wallkill River Center for the Arts and The Chris Farlekas Legacy Fund.

"An evening of Greek song under the stars with soprano Julie Ziavras"

Soprano Julie Ziavras will present an evening of Greek song by well known and beloved Greek composers including Hadjidakis, Theodorakis, Xarchakos, Markopoulos, Kouyioumtzis, and many others. A musical ensemble lead by maestro Spiro Cardamis at the piano will include Aimilio Koumanis, bouzouki and mandolin, Dimitris Kottarides, cello and Akis Sipsas classical guitar. The concert will also feature the premiere a new song written by Spiro for Julie's voice.

The concert will take place under the stars in the courtyard of the Kastorio Highschool. Kastorio is a beautiful village with traditional stone houses, bakeries and taverns and panoramic views of the Taygetos Mountains. The concert is a part of the Summer Cultural Events of Kastori and is organized by the Municipality of Sparta's office of Culture and the Environment, the Kastori Local Council and the Cultural Association Polydeus.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Soprano Julie Ziavras is guest soloist with the chamber ensemble Musica Mundana under the Artistic Direction of pianist Aysegul Durakoglu. The musical program is inspired by the journey of the legendary Orient Express which traveled between Paris and Istambul at the end of the 19th century. The international repertory includes waltzes, tangos, gypsy and czardas music by Bartok, Liszt, Strauss and Monti, music by Debussy, Satie, Piazzolla, operatic arias by Lehar and Offenbach and Ottoman court music from the 19th century. Julie will present Ravel's Greek Songs, Offenbach, Massenet, Franz Lehar and Richard Strauss, accompanied by the chamber ensemble.

Performers include Members of the Chamber Music Society Musica Mundana; Aysegul Durakoglu, pianist and Artistic Director, cellist Leo Grinhauz, violinist Claudia Schaer and narrator Anthony Pennino. Durakoglu, an acclaimed pianist, has recorded and performed internationally with major orchestras. She began her musical training at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory and as a scholarship recipient continued her studies in NY receiving her Master degree from Juilliard and Ph.D from New York University, where she served on the piano faculty. In 1998, she established the Chamber Music Society Musica Mundana and is currently on the faculty of the Music and Technology Department at the Stevens Institute.

A Concert for Claudia

Julie Ziavras will join a cast of six opera singers celebrating the life of the late soprano Claudia Cummings, who has had a lasting impact on the classical music scene of the Hudson Valley.

In her 25 year operatic career, Claudia Cummings had appeared all over the world singing lead operatic roles, including with the NY City Opera, San Francisco Opera and Chicago Lyric Opera. After moving to the Hudson Valley in 1979, she produced numerous concerts throughout the region as the Co-Producing Director of the Festival Theater of New York with her husband, the eminent Shakespearean actor Jack Aranson. She also was the Founder and Artistic Director of the Opera Company of the Highlands (OCH) and Conductor of the Newburgh Symphonic Chorale. Mount Saint Mary College conferred upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

Julie performed in numerous concerts and operas that she directed, including principle roles in her OCH productions of The Marriage of Figaro, Die Fledermaus, Hansel & Gretel and Showboat. This concert is being organized by two of her colleagues from OCH Terri Vargas and Rose Wolvek.

For this Celebration, Julie will join the following principal singers of OCH singing arias and ensembles from operas that Claudia directed; Lori-Brown Mirabel, Jeremy Moore, Vira Slywotzky, Jabob Feldman and Rebecca Gordon, with piano accompanist Ryan Kennedy. There will be a showing of selections from Claudia's superb PBS performance of Lucia Di Lammermoor. Claudia's DVDs will be on sale for $15.

Soprano Julie Ziavras will join the eminent Greek singer Yiannis Thomopoulos in a musical concert celebrating the poet/lyricist Nikos Gatsos, with songs by Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarchoskos and others. The concert is accompanied by a musical ensemble with Aimilios Koumanis, bouzouki, mandolin, Vassilis Tzamouranis, bouzouki, Yiorgos Pantazopoulos, piano and the well known singer Yiannis Thomopoulos, who enjoys an extensive concert career and has a large discography in this genre. The concert on August 10 at 9:00 pm takes place in the school in the picturesque village of Akovos in the Taygetus mountains, located just north of Kalamata in the Peleponnese. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert on August 23 is organized by the Orpheus Society of Neo Skopos and is sponsored by the mayor of Neo Skopos Emmanouil Pappas. It takes place the opening night of a week long festival which includes dancing groups from various regions of Greece, theater groups, a musical tribute to the classical composer Nikos Astrinides (whose family was from Skopos in Eastern Thrace) and culminates in the Hagios Prodromos feast. Julie's grandmother was a Greek born in 1903 in the town of Skopos, located in Eastern Thrace, Turkey and was a survivor of the expulsion of the Greeks from the area in 1916, after which she emigrated to the US. Tickets for the concert are 5 euros and the proceeds go towards improvements to the Orpheus Heritage Hall located in Neo Skopos.
